Dholak dance first appeared in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is a style of group dance that is performed by both men and women while using a dholak, a drum with a cylindrical shape. The dholak player, who creates the dances rhythm, is surrounded by the dancers, who round him or her in a circular manner. Each stride the dancers take is accompanied by a dholak beat as they grasp hands and move in unison. Despite the dancers straightforward and repeated moves, the overall impression is vibrant and energising. Dholak dance is performed at social events like weddings and festivals.
